Synopsis

Their last mission wasn't on the battlefield.

Thirty years after serving together in the Vietnam War, Larry, Sal and Richard, reunite for a different type of mission: to bury Doc's son, a young Marine killed in Iraq. Forgoing the burial, the trio take the casket on a bittersweet trip up the coast to New Hampshire - along the way, reminiscing and coming to terms with the shared memories of a war that continues to shape their lives.

Back in 2014, I went to go see Boyhood in theaters with my Dad and my Grandmas. After I saw it I knew that I finally realized that film was my passion. It floored me with the humanism and told me movies didn’t have to be big Blockbusters, it can just be a conversation with people and just living life. I was so inspired by that and Boyhood is one of the driving forces to push me to make films.

Tonight I got to meet Richard Linklater and it was visceral. I was shaking when I went up to him, took a photo with him, and shook his hand. I have been feeling very down as of late and this lifted my spirits. I’m thankful for Richard Linklater, he is truly one of my heroes and I’m glad to have met him.

A physical manifestation of Linklater's transitory experience, not just in time or relationship but in the duality of death, of a spirit being gone and a body being left behind. Whereas The Last Detail was about buying time, Last Flag Flying is a reflection on what we have left, who we choose to spend it with, and what ends up mattering. That Linklater uses such a spiritual sequel angle to ruminate on the specifics of governmental lies ends up affecting typical moments of patriotism and pride, with a final coda being uncommonly heavy in an ambiguous way. Steve Carell is the standout, far and away, although all three actors are parading through Linklater and Ponicsan's screenplay in the most…

My memory of THE LAST DETAIL is pretty thin, so I have no idea how this does or doesn't line up. As Linklater hangouts go I was surprised to find this one fueled mostly by guilt, simmering resentment, and anger. The three leads are quite good (Carell especially) although they seem to have been left a bit on their own...Cranston in particular keeps enunciating like he's projecting for a stage audience, it's a bit odd. Anyway like a lot of Linklater's movies this is pretty sneaky. The last scene might nail you.

  • Review by Filipe Furtado ★★★½ 1

Linklater’s old man hangout movie completes the process of turning him into an unfashionable director, but is just him at his element doing what he does best. Some of the finest use of Carrel’s underrated dramatic chops. And as usual It has a modulation of drama and sense of rhythm that most of his peers can’t approach.

Lawrence Fishburne saying “Mm-mm, Praise God” every 5 minutes is my new thing.

  • Review by kevinyang ★★★ 3

A Richard Linklater road trip comedy sounds like the greatest idea ever. It's a perfect setup for his naturalistic, free wheeling dialogue and his vigorous commitment to character, for his nearly unmatched skill at drawing humanity and beauty out of apparent mundanity. He certainly accomplishes that at select moments throughout this film, but more often than not, the conversations feel artificial, strained in a way. The characters almost feel different for the sake of being differentrather than different enough to draw out hidden complexities. Cranston's hammy character is well acted--no surprise there, he's one of the best actors alive--but it sometimes feels forced comedy-wise. Maybe that's more the screenplay's fault, and hey, maybe it's wrong for me to ascribe your…

  • Review by Drew Clark ★★★★½

A deeply thoughtful and sensitive film that is comfortable enough in it’s own skin to explore—without the need to provide answers—all the relationships between grief, patriotism, resentment, distrust, and pride that permeate our cultural understanding of modern military service and interventionism. It’s nuanced and willing to make a mess of its themes while never losing sight of the humanity at the center of its larger discussions.

I’m pretty surprised how underappeciated this is and that it’s the Linklater film I’ve managed to put off the longest.

    * Though I had a 100% satisfying emotional experience with this movie, my brain tells me I should only give it 4.5/5 because it is a comedy and thus not profound enough for a full score. Fuck you, brain. 😠

    * It is as powerful a statement against the Iraq War as The Hurt Locker (2009) was. But it does that through comedy and provides a very entertaining time despite these heavy points.

    * With the presence of Laurence Fishburne, Steve Carell and Bryan Cranston, it is the best ensemble comedy I have seen in a long time. 2 hours with these actors whom I love, obviously added to my enjoyment of the movie. In the beginning I was most…

bias never reared its head so boldly as it did last night, when after seeing a Q&A with Linklater, i convinced myself for a moment that maybe i DID love this film

but i know i didn't. i love Linklater, but i didn't love this, and that's fine. it's more than fine, really, because i was MERE FEET AWAY FROM HIM............ and this time i did not say anything embarrassing about art school, so cheers!
real quick about the panel though: excellent moderator! Darryl Ponicsan was very moving, Fishburne and Carrell are so... idk i want to say surreal but really what i mean is i can't fucking believe mira convinced me to sit in the front row because GOD…

This movie was sensitive to the soldiers who died during the Iraq War. It featured great performances from Steve Carell, Laurence Fishburne, and Cicely Tyson. Bryan Cranston fans will also appreciate his performance.

But seriously, gotta love Laurence Fishburne as a preacher. I would totally go to that church.

    Vegan alert:
-Laurence Fishburne's wife serves meat for dinner.
-They pass by a hot dog stand.

This movie has both kinds of acting: loud and quiet.

  • Review by Dave Edwards ★★★

Linklater, the king of hangout film, makes an unofficial sequel to The Last Detail, the best (in my estimation) hangout film of all-time. Sounds like a match made in heaven, right? While Last Flag Flying is satisfying overall, the film is a bit of a mixed bag and struggles to get out of the long shadow of Hal Asby’s classic. The film takes place thirty years after Shepherd, Nealon, and Mueller serve together in Vietnam, reuniting them for one more road trip, this time to bury Shepherd’s son, a marine killed in Iraq. Along the way, the three work to reconcile their feelings and share memories of a war that still looms large in each of their lives, shaping their…
